1 Kings, Chapter 19:
Verses from 1 Kings, Chapter 19 of the book of 1 Samuel of the Bible.

Elijah flees to Horeb
- 1. Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done, including how he had killed all the prophets of Baal.
- 2. Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah with the following message: “May the gods strike me down if I do not make your life as you made theirs by this time tomorrow.”
- 3. Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba in Judah and left his servant there.
- 4. Then he walked in the desert for a day and finally sat down under a broom tree. He asked for death, saying, “I have had enough, Lord! Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.”
- 5. Then Elijah lay down and fell asleep under the tree. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”
- 6. Elijah looked around and saw bread baked on hot coals and a jar of water near his head. He ate and drank and lay down again.
- 7. The angel of the Lord came a second time and touched Elijah. “Get up and eat,” he said, “because the journey is too long for you.”
- 8. Elijah got up, ate and drank, and strengthened by the food he had eaten, he walked forty days and forty nights until he reached Mount Horeb, the mountain of God.
The Lord appears to Elijah
- 9. So he went into a cave and spent the night there. Then the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
- 10. Elijah replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of Heaven’s Armies. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars and killed your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”
- 11. The Lord said, “Go out and stand before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” At that moment a strong wind swept through the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.
- 12. After the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was a soft whisper.
- 13. When Elijah heard this, he covered his face with his cloak and went out of the cave and stood at the entrance. Then a voice said to him again, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
- 14. Elijah replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of Heaven’s Armies. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars and killed your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”
- 15. The Lord said to Elijah, “Go back the way you came and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.
- 16. Anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah as your successor as prophet.
- 17. Jehu will kill anyone who escapes the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will kill anyone who escapes the sword of Jehu.
- 18. Yet I have reserved for myself seven thousand people in Israel, all those who have not bowed the knee to Baal and whose lips have not kissed him.”
The Call of Elisha
- 19. Elijah went on from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen and was driving the twelfth yoke. Elijah went up to Elisha and threw his cloak over him.
- 20. Elisha left the oxen and ran after Elijah. He said, “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, and then I will go with you.” Elijah replied, “Go back, for what have I done to you?”
- 21. Elisha went back and took a yoke of oxen and sacrificed them. He cooked the meat of the oxen with the wood from the plow and gave it to the people, and they ate. After this, Elisha got up and followed Elijah and became his servant.
